The pharma decarbonization challenge
Solvents account for 80–90% of process mass in API manufacturing. Safion’s proprietary catalytic platform converts renewable feedstocks into ultra-high-purity acetonitrile with approximately 90% lower carbon intensity than fossil-derived acetonitrile. It addresses rapidly growing oligonucleotide demand while creating a material Scope 3 reduction lever for pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The HEFA feedstock bottleneck
HEFA can scale only as fast as sustainable oil supply. Through proprietary fermentation, Cocura Oil™ converts abundant sugars into extracellular, HEFA-compatible oil that separates without cell disruption or extraction solvents. High-value coproducts and radically simplified recovery are designed into the platform to support competitive economics at commercial scale.

Safion owns and operates its first-of-a-kind renewable solvent pilot plant, designed and built by our team from proprietary process designs and IP. The plant represents a 300× scale-up from the national-laboratory technology first developed in 2017, operates today at up to 90 L/hr, and has de-risked the platform for commercial deployment.
Cocura Oil™ has completed a 1,000× scale-up, advancing from 10 L to 10,000 L fermentations and producing over 1.5 MT of material. The technology is production-ready, backed by proven engineering and solid commercial viability.
